Albert Hofmann the inventor of drug LSD has died aged 102

Discoverer of LSD dead at 102

Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, who in 1943 accidentally discovered the hallucinogenic effects of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), has died at the age of 102, Reuters reports.

Hoffman passed away at his home in Basel on 29 April as a result of a heart attack, according to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.

The chemist had in the late 1930s been working on possible medical applications of alkaloid derivatives of the fungus ergot and subsequently synthesised a number of such derivatives, including LSD. It wasn't until 1943, however, when a small amount accidentally leaked onto his hand that the compound's mind-blowing capability was revealed.

Hoffman recounted a "remarkable restlessness, combined with slight dizziness", elaborating: "At home I lay down and sank into a not unpleasant intoxication-like condition, characterised by an extremely stimulated imagination.

"In a dreamlike state, with eyes closed (I found the daylight too unpleasantly glaring), I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours. After some two hours this condition faded away."

The rest is history. While the CIA infamously experimented with the mind-control possibilities of LSD during the 1950s and 60s in its Project MK-ULTRA, it was Timothy Leary and his "turn on, tune in, drop out" mantra who popularised the substance among the hippy movement and brought it to the attention of the wider world.

Hoffman maintained the movement had "hijacked" the drug and insisted he'd produced it "as a medicine and not as a substance to be abused". He continued to defend its possible use "in analysis of how the mind works, hoping it could be used to recognise and treat illnesses like schizophrenia", long after it was banned in the 1960s.

The “Action Dashboard” (An Alternative To Crappy Dashboards)

Wed, 30 Apr 2008 02:05:53 PDT
Know the difference between a Reporting Squirrel and a Analysis Ninja? One is in the business of providing data. One is in the business of providing, to use a old fashioned word, information. This one of the core reasons why most dashboards are “crappy”, i.e. they are data pukes that provide little in terms of context and even less in terms of actionable value. Here are some examples of sub optimal dashboards, sub optimal in my mind from a actionable perspective. . . . Perhaps the most c

Why Blogging Has Been Light and More on My Independent Job

Time for another of those oh-so-rare meta posts on the site. Lately, blogging has been relatively light on this site. I've started my new job at the New Mexico Independent, and despite what fellow blogger Mario Burgos believes we aren't all being paid enough to live lavish lifestyles or to go sip chardonnay as Joe Monahan said of progressives recently. In fact, I am being paid a stipend of $1500 a month for my work. It's public how much us "fellows" make -- go take a look at the job descript

Education On Relieving Asthma Concerns

Wed, 30 Apr 2008 01:32:30 PDT
Education On Relieving Asthma Concerns April 30th, 2008 by James Redder One of the most worrying global health trends in recent years is the number of asthma sufferers; it wasn’t that long ago that asthma only affected a small percentage of the population. Although it is treatable, asthma is still a chronic condition which affects the function of breathing of every person who is affected by it. This is a respiratory condition that when not treated properly can easily result in death, if the a

Months ago while sitting in a restaurant next to two gentleman having a conversation about Al Gore and how great he was this and that I asked a very simple question that led to rage. Now keep in mind I had spoken with one of these people earlier in the evening. That person is friendly with a waiter we know. Granted with the pompous attitude he had then I should have known what his reaction would be when I asked my question. And yes I was eavesdropping a bit. These two gentleman had also put awa

New kind of beetle found! By CBC staff! Staff on the state-owned CBC Newsworld, where, suspiciously like Fox News Channel’s O’Reilly Factor, “The Spin Stops Here”! (-- or is that just on their “Politics” program?) apparently discovered the new creature. They called it the “GREENHOUSE BEETLE”. Most other people, like the folks at the National Post, which features the little bugger on their front page today, call it the Mountain Pine Beetle. Labcoats call it Dendroctonus Ponderosae. Bu
